The World Health Organisation has formally declared Nigeria Ebola free. The declaration was made this morning in Abuja, at a joint press conference by the World Health Organisation and the Federal Ministry of Health.

Nigeria’s certification as “Ebola-free” comes 42 days after the last infected person was given a clean bill of health. Those 42 days amounts to two incubation periods without any new confirmed case. The incubation period for an Ebola infection is 21 days.
Making the announcement, the WHO country representative, Rui Gama Vaz said:
“The virus is gone for now. The outbreak in Nigeria has been defeated. This is a spectacular success story that shows to the world that Ebola can be contained.

Nigeria is the second country to get the certification after Senegal, got hers on Friday.
