European Union (EU) regulators have approved the merger of two major of Facebook and WhatsApp, arguing that the marriage would not hamper competition.
Facebook had acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion in February but regulators in the US had in April, after approving the deal, warned Facebook to abide by WhatsApp’s stringent privacy practices.
According to the EU Competition Commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, “while Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp are two of the most popular apps, most people use more than one communications app".
He added: “We have carefully reviewed this proposed acquisition and come to the conclusion that it would not hamper competition in this dynamic and growing market. Consumers will continue to have a wide choice of consumer communications apps.”
WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging platforms in cyberspace, with 600 million users worldwide.
Facebook which has about 1.3 billion users, has its own messaging app, called Facebook Messenger. The two services’ merger was approved by th commission after it was discovered that they were “not close competitors”
