About 600 rams and cows were carted away by armed bandits on the eve of Eid-el-Kabir in Billashe village in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The incident occurred in the night and residents have lamented that the situation will prevent many of them from slaughtering rams for the Eid-el-Kabir festival.
According to the residents, the bandits carried out a house-to-house operation. It was learnt that some of the animals were recovered as residents went after the bandits.
It is a tradition for families in rural Zamfara to rear rams and other domestic animals for sacrifice and sale, but the bandits have disrupted the plans by their action.
Police spokesman in Zamfara, Lawan Abdullahi, confirmed the incident, and said that they were working with the military to recover the stolen animals. According to him, cattle rustling holds sway in the area because of its difficult terrain. He said most of the villages are difficult to get to due to bad roads and poor phone networks.
He, however stated that about 2,219 stolen cows have been recovered by the command in collaboration with the military, between June and August this year.
