A handful of woman would give an arm and a leg to have a baby, and would not hesitate to invoke curses on a middle aged woman, simply identified as Mrs Ajegbu, who was alleged to have flushed her seven month old baby down the toilet.
Residents of Amagu in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State on October 13, held her for flushing the poor baby.
Mrs Ajegbu’s “wickedness” was exposed when on that fateful day, the toilet of the compound in which she lived began to smell beyond what her husband and neighbours could bear. After unsuccessfully trying to fix or trace the source of the bad odour, her husband was prompted to engage the services of a plumber.
Eyewitnesses said that while the plumber was working, he discovered the decaying body of a baby stuck within the toilet’s drainage pipe that led to the soak-away pit. Apart from decaying, it had been obstructing the free flow of materials through the pipe
According to a female eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, the baby was male and about seven months old. Ajegbu denied flushing her baby but could not explain the whereabouts of her missing baby.
Her husband, who admitted that his wife had been pregnant, however said that he could not care less of the missing baby because he knew it was not his. He said that long before she got pregnant, he never slept with her.
An unconfirmed report has it that she was handed over to the police although there was no word yet as to her fate
