The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in Ebonyi State has endorsed the Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu as a consensus candidate for the 2015 gubernatorial election.
The stakeholders’ meeting was presided over by Governor Martin Elechi at the Government House. It lasted over six hours and had in attendance, members of the state PDP caucus, lawmakers, stakeholders and youth leaders across the 13 local government areas of the State.
Chukwu’s candidature was ratified in “the spirit of rotation and zoning”. The governorship position was zoned to Ebonyi south senatorial district, specifically, Afikpo North LGA where the minister comes from.
Two other candidates from the zone, Prince Sam Agom Eze and Chief Ben Akpa, reportedly stepped down for the Health Minister who owes his rising profile to his ministry’s performance in the successful containment of the Ebola virus which entered the country in July.
Governor Elechi was reported as saying that zoning the governorship slot to the South was to compliment the immense contributions of late Dr. Akanu Ibiam in the state creation as he hailed from the area, Unwana Afikpo LGA of the state.
He was also quoted to have said: “Ebonyi is a poor young state that is strong and there is no need for wasteful campaigns; we believe that our decision is a good one; we strongly believe in God.
“The message will go round; there is room for divergent views but ultimately we believe in consensus”.
