Newly promoted Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in Zone 7, Mbu Joseph Mbu, yesterday, came into the news again after he allegedly ordered the detention of Africa Independent Television (AIT) reporter, Amaechi Anakwe.

It was reported that Mbu invited Anakwe to his office for allegedly referring to him as a “controversial police officer” during a television programme. Anakwe had on the interview programme yesterday morning asked Mbu’s successor at the FCT command, CP Wilson Inalegwu, if he would be as controversial as Mbu.

AIT management said that the AIG invited the journalist to his office and then ordered that he be detained.
Media practitioners and rights advocates yesterday condemned the AIG’s action, describing it as “going too far and exhibiting power drunkenness”.

Mbu, who was Rivers State commissioner of Police before his deployment to Abuja, was in the news for his hostile relationship with Governor Rotimi Amaechi. He recently described himself as a “lion”, who tamed a leopard in Rivers State, apparently referring to Governor Amaechi.

Amaechi, however, replied Mbu, describing him as a man who “completely lacks the steel and strength of character of a lion, and is rather a shameless, corrupt puppet and toothless attack dog of a woman”.

There are reports that Anakwe might be charged to court today.
