Saturday’s Eid-el-Kabir celebrations got a taint of tragedy in Ondo State as eight persons lost their lives in a fatal accident that involved on Akure-Owo Road.
The accident involved a Toyota Sienna Car with Reg No Anambra ABN 214 and a truck marked Lagos LND 426 XC. Both vehicles were said to have collided head on when the Sienna overtook another vehicle dangerously only to come face to face with the truck coming from the opposite direction.
The Sienna was said to be heading towards Abuja, while the truck was heading towards Akure.
According to an eyewitness, six of the nine occupants of the Sienna died on the spot while two died on the way to the hospital. Three people in the truck were injured and were taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, for medical treatment.
After the arrival of officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) and policemen at the crash scene, cutlasses and other instruments had to be used to cut open the vehicle before the victims were removed.
The spokesman for Ondo State Police Command, Wole Ogodo, confirmed the crash and said that the three survivors were responding to treatment.
He blamed the unfortunate accident on dangerous overtaking and said that the driver of the truck escaped from the scene immediately the crash occurred.
